Veda is Sanskrit for knowledge — for sacred text, for the wisdom carried across generations. We did not choose this name arbitrarily. It was already written into the piece. Every surface of this circular footed tray speaks a language that craftsmen across the subcontinent have been speaking for centuries — arabesque scrollwork, geometric mandala patterns, floral motifs that reference both Islamic decorative tradition and the deep craft heritage of Indian woodwork.

We found this piece in a workshop where the carving was exceptional — the kind of detail that takes years of practice to execute with consistency around a full circumference. The form was already strong. Four ball feet lifting it off the surface. A central medallion anchoring the interior. A continuous carved band wrapping the full exterior without a single interruption.

What it needed was the right finish. The raw wood was beautiful but young-looking. We worked with the maker and our own finishing artisans to develop the antique whitewash — a warm ivory applied over the natural mango grain, then selectively distressed so the underlying gold-brown shows through at the high points of every carved motif. The result is a piece that looks as though it has been in a family for two generations. Not old. Inherited.
